Professor Ali Adibi from Georgia Institute of Technology Visited our School for Academic Exchanges

At the invitation of Prof. Shao Xiaopeng, executive dean of the school, Prof.  Ali Adibi from Georgia Institute of Technology visited our school for a series of academic exchanges on April 15 to 20.
On the morning of April 16, Prof. Ali Adibi gave an academic report entitled “High-Q Integrated Nanophotonic Resonators for Lab-on-chip Sensing and Spectroscopy” in the III-412 lecture hall, the West Building, which was hosted by Dr. Liu Fei. In the lecture, Prof. Ali Adibi introduced the report topic -- chip sensors, with biological and environmental sensing, chemical reagent detection and other issues as entry points. He detailed a chip-level multiplexed sensor formed with high-Q integrated photonic resonators featured by ultra-compact and high-sensitivity, and realized the on-chip sensing structure by combining spectrometer. The main challenges in implementing such devices and their solutions were also discussed, including manufacturing defects and errors caused by environment. There was a strong academic atmosphere and continuous applause in the lecture.  

On the morning of April 17, Professor Ali Adibi presented an academic report entitled "Novel deep-learning-based techniques for design and optimization of photonic metastructures" in the III-412 lecture hall, West Building, which was hosted by Dr. Liu Fei. In the report, Professor Ali Adibi introduced the analysis, design and optimization of an electromagnetic nanostructure based on deep learning technology. The close correlation between the characteristics of electromagnetic design problems and deep learning techniques could reduce the dimensionality of the problem, and convert the "many-to-one" of input and output into "one-to-one", so as to effectively  reduce the computational complexity. At the same time, he also applied it to design series of photon substructures, and compared it with traditional design to analyze their advantages and disadvantages. We had a warm academic exchange with Professor Ali Adibi in the lecture, and his scientific rigor and humorous style won unanimous praise and enthusiastic applause.

On the morning of April 18th, our school held a lecture about “Professor Coffee” in the old Comprehensive Building of our new campus, the second floor of Xidian Impression Cafe. Professor Ali Adibi from Georgia institute of technology was presented and many graduate students and undergraduates participated in the activity. At the beginning, professor Ali Adibi introduced the basic situation of Georgia institute of technology in the United States. He detailed the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering and encouraged students to study abroad. Then, taking the University as an example, he introduced the specific application process and major setting of master's and doctoral degree in the United States. At the same time, Pro. Ali Adibi had a warm exchange with students, and answered their questions about studying abroad in detail.

On the afternoon of 18th, Prof. Ali Adibi attended academic salon in the middle hall of the West Building, and delivered a report entitled "Research in Photonics Research Group at Georgia Tech: Integrated Nanophotonics and the Path to the Future", which was hosted by Prof. Zhu Jiangfeng. The professor shared the results and their future directions of research group in Georgia Institute of Technology. He introduced the research status and development prospect of silicon photonics, the application of optical interconnection as well as the challenges we faced.  

On the morning of April 19th, Prof. Ali Adibi attended an academic discussion with Prof. Shao Xiaopeng, focusing on the school and discipline construction. Later, Prof. Shao invited Prof. Adibi to visit the laboratory of the Photoelectric Imaging Engineering which leads by himself. Exchanges and academic discussions was conducted with relevant research groups.

After that, Prof. Ali Adibi held a discussion with the staff of OSA Xidian Student Chapter, and communicated with the students on various issues both in scientific research activities and daily life. In the end, he took some photos with OSA XidianStudent Chapter teachers and students.

Ali Adibi,现任美国佐治亚理工学院(Georgia Institute of Technology)教授,fellow of OSA, SPIE and AAAS1990年获得Shiraz University学士学位,1994年和1999年分别获得Georgia Institute of TechnologyCalifornia Institute of Technology博士学位,现任任Georgia Institute of Technology Bio and Environmental Sensing Technologies (BEST)主任、School of Electrical and Computer Engineering主席,《Journal of Nanophotonics》杂志主编, Photonics West meeting的纳米光子项目跟踪主席。累计发表150余篇国际期刊论文和400余篇会议论文。曾获得Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and EngineersNSF CAREER Awardthe SPIE Technology Achievement Award等多个奖项。
